The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) does not vouch for the safety of fluoridation chemicals because it has not conducted its own risk assessment on fluoride, according to Amanda Phelka of NSF International, who was deposed as part of the ongoing fluoride lawsuit.

Over 13 studies demonstrate fluoride having negative effects to the brain at levels of 0.7mg/L and below, yet the health department chooses to ignore these studies and continue with the fluoride program because it may reduce the need for a fixable cavity. Nobody in the state keeps track of tooth decay rates so we really don't know if fluoride works. Cochrane Reviews found that, "There is insufficient evidence to determine whether water fluoridation results in a change in disparities in caries levels across SES (Socio Economic Status). We did not identify any evidence, meeting the review's inclusion criteria, to determine the effectiveness of water fluoridation for preventing caries in adults."
